What Is GEO? How to Get Found in AI Search (2026 Guide)

IIDMS Editorial Team 10 min read
What is GEO: a 2026 guide to getting found and cited in AI search such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT

More and more people now get answers from Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude before they visit a website. That changes what it means to be found online. This guide explains what generative engine optimisation (GEO) is, how AI search chooses its sources, what the 2026 data says, and a practical checklist to help your brand get mentioned and cited in AI answers.

It is part of our marketing fundamentals series. If you are new to search, start with what is SEO: a beginner's guide.

Definition: Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your content easy for AI search tools to find, understand, trust and cite, so your brand appears in AI-generated answers. It is also called answer engine optimisation (AEO) or AI search optimisation. GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

AI Search in 2026: The Key Numbers

Finding Figure Source
US Google searches that end without a click (Jan to Apr 2026) 68%, up from 60% in 2024 SparkToro, using Similarweb data
Google searches showing an AI Overview More than 20% SparkToro 2026
Drop in click-through rate when an AI Overview appears Nearly 60% SparkToro 2026
Monthly users of Google AI Mode Over 1 billion Google, I/O 2026
ChatGPT weekly active users 900 million (February 2026) OpenAI
Share of all website traffic coming from AI assistants About 1.08% on average, roughly 10 times the year before Conductor 2026 AEO/GEO Benchmarks
ChatGPT's share of AI referral traffic 87.4% Conductor 2026 AEO/GEO Benchmarks
Visibility gain in AI answers from adding citations, quotations and statistics Up to 40% GEO research paper, KDD 2024

The picture is clear. AI answers are taking a bigger share of search, fewer searches lead to a click, and AI tools already send a small but fast-growing amount of traffic. The brands that AI tools mention and cite gain visibility even when users do not click.

GEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?

Area Traditional SEO GEO / AI search optimisation
Goal Rank pages in search results and earn clicks Be mentioned, cited and recommended inside AI answers
Where it shows Google and Bing results pages AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude
Unit of success A page ranking for a keyword A passage, fact or brand being used in an answer
Main metrics Rankings, clicks, organic traffic Mentions, citations, share of voice, AI referral traffic, branded search
What it relies on Crawlable, indexed, relevant, trusted pages The same foundations, plus clear, quotable, well-sourced answers and a strong brand presence across the web

Google's own guidance is direct: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the same SEO best practices apply. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. In practice, GEO is good SEO plus extra attention to how answers are written and how widely your brand is trusted.

How AI Search Chooses Its Sources

  1. The question is broken down. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches (a "query fan-out") to cover different parts of a question.
  2. Candidate pages are retrieved. Google's AI uses Google's index. ChatGPT search and other assistants use their own crawlers and search partners. If a page cannot be crawled or indexed, it cannot be used.
  3. Useful passages are selected. AI tools pull specific paragraphs, lists, tables and definitions that directly answer part of the question.
  4. Trust is weighed. Content that is accurate, sourced, up to date and from recognised brands or experts is more likely to be used.
  5. An answer is written with links. The final response cites some of the sources it used, and those links are your chance to earn a visit.

What the Research Says Works

The original GEO study, by researchers from Princeton and IIT Delhi (published at the ACM KDD conference in 2024), tested how changes to content affect visibility in AI answers:

Change to the content Effect on visibility in AI answers
Adding citations, quotations and statistics Gains of over 40% across many queries
Citing credible sources About +27%
Improving fluency and readability About +28%
Using the right technical terms About +18%
Making the text easy to understand About +14%
Keyword stuffing About 8% worse than doing nothing

The lesson matches what Google recommends: write clear, well-sourced, genuinely useful content for people. Old tricks such as keyword stuffing do not help and can hurt.

The GEO Checklist: How to Get Cited in AI Answers

1. Get the technical basics right

  • Make sure search engines can crawl and index your pages. Check robots.txt and any firewall or CDN settings that might block crawlers.
  • Keep important content as text, not only inside images, PDFs or videos.
  • Use fast, mobile-friendly pages with a clear main content area.
  • Decide on AI crawler access deliberately. Blocking AI crawlers can keep you out of those assistants' answers, while allowing them can bring citations and traffic.
  • Add structured data (such as Organization, Article, FAQ, Course and LocalBusiness) where it matches the visible content.

2. Write answer-first content

  • Start key sections with a direct, one or two sentence answer, then add detail.
  • Use question-style headings that match how people ask, for example "How long does it take to learn SEO?".
  • Include clear definitions, step-by-step lists and comparison tables. AI tools often lift these directly.
  • Add FAQs that answer follow-up questions.
  • Keep each paragraph focused on one idea so it still makes sense when quoted on its own.

3. Make content trustworthy and quotable

  • Use current statistics and name the source and date.
  • Add original data, examples, case studies and expert quotes that other sites cannot copy.
  • Show who wrote the content and why they are qualified.
  • Update important pages regularly and show the date.

4. Build topical authority

Cover your subject in depth with a pillar page and supporting articles that link to each other. AI tools favour sources that show broad, consistent expertise on a topic. Our content marketing guide explains how to plan topic clusters.

5. Build your brand beyond your website

  • AI tools learn about brands from across the web: reviews, directories, news articles, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, forums and industry lists.
  • Keep your name, address, services and descriptions consistent everywhere.
  • Earn mentions through PR, partnerships, guest articles and expert commentary.
  • Collect genuine reviews and keep your Google Business Profile up to date. See our local SEO checklist for Dubai businesses.

6. Support text with images and video

Google recommends high-quality images and videos alongside text, because AI search is increasingly multimodal. Videos with clear titles, descriptions and transcripts can also appear in AI answers. See our video marketing guide.

How to Measure AI Search Visibility

What to measure How
Traffic from AI assistants The AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics 4 (added in 2026) groups visits from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Included in your overall Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type
Mentions and citations Ask AI tools the questions your customers ask each month and record whether your brand is mentioned or linked, or use an AI visibility tracking tool
Brand demand Track branded searches in Search Console. Being mentioned in AI answers often leads to more people searching your name
Business results Leads, enquiries and sales from AI traffic, tracked as key events in GA4 and in your CRM

Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, so judge GEO by enquiries and sales, not only by traffic. Our Google Analytics 4 guide shows how to set up key events and the AI Assistant channel.

GEO Myths to Ignore

  • "SEO is dead." AI tools rely on search indexes and well-optimised pages. SEO is the foundation of GEO.
  • "You need a special AI file or markup." Google says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema are needed for its AI features.
  • "You can buy your way into AI answers." Organic AI answers cannot be bought. Visibility is earned through useful content and a trusted brand.
  • "More keywords means more mentions." Research shows keyword stuffing reduces visibility in AI answers.
  • "AI traffic is too small to matter." It is still a small share of traffic, but it is growing fast, and mentions shape buying decisions even without a click.

A 30-Day GEO Plan for Your Business

Week Focus Actions
1 Baseline List 20 questions customers ask. Ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and record who is mentioned. Check that GA4 and Search Console are set up
2 Technical Check crawling, indexing, page speed and structured data. Review whether AI crawlers are allowed
3 Content Rewrite your top 5 service or course pages with answer-first sections, FAQs, tables and current sourced statistics
4 Brand Update your Google Business Profile, directory listings and social profiles. Ask happy customers for reviews and plan one PR or guest-article placement

Repeat the baseline questions every month to track progress. AI tools can also help with the work itself, as shown in how to write AI prompts for marketing and our AI-powered digital marketing webinar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation: optimising content so generative AI tools such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention and cite it in their answers.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. AI search tools depend on crawlable, indexed, trustworthy pages, and Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features.

How do I get my website cited in ChatGPT?

Make sure your pages can be crawled, answer questions clearly at the start of each section, include current sourced facts, and build mentions of your brand on trusted sites. There is no guaranteed method, so track results monthly.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special schema?

Google says no special files or markup are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard structured data that matches your visible content is still useful.

How long does GEO take to work?

Technical fixes can have an effect within weeks, once pages are recrawled. Building authority and brand mentions usually takes several months.

Can small businesses compete in AI search?

Yes. AI answers often cite specialist, local and well-explained pages, not only big brands. Clear, expert answers to specific questions are a strong advantage.

Final Thoughts

AI search is changing how people discover brands, but the fundamentals have not changed: be crawlable, be genuinely useful, be accurate and be trusted. Write answer-first content with current sources, build your topical authority and brand presence, and measure mentions, citations and enquiries as well as clicks. The businesses that start now will be the ones AI tools recommend tomorrow.
